Now you'll have more time to read the Economist and troll garage sales.

Editor's Note: Indeed I shall. Imagine if you had more time to dedicate to Blue Boy Magazine. You'd be in heaven.

Editor's Note: You're funny. Deep says those lyrics were written by George Michael.

I worked at Bausch & Lomb ages ago. They brought in a marketing genius who found they could boost profits on glasses by raising prices. That actually worked long enough for him to get a gargantuan bonus and then beat feet out of there. Competition boosted quality and reduced prices and B&L went out of the eyewear business entirely. I (used to) listen to WHAM driving to work 5-6 a.m. They got rid of Beth and others to lean down costs and changed format to myriad very short commercials so you never could anticipate what was coming up next. I stopped listening and the ride in is blessedly peaceful now. I discovered I don't need WHAM!

Many of my older neighbors subscribe to the paper. I am sure they don't have internet access. I will be curious to see if they stop their paper. I would. Like you I have only used the online edition a couple of times. To either check the obits or houses for sale in my neighborhood The newspaper itself sucks.

I had to google Blue Boy magazine. Would you care to explain how you already knew what it was?

Editor's Note: I admit, I went through your recycle bin. I apologize. Why were the pages stuck together?

"Every subscriber has his habits while reading the paper- perhaps over coffee in the morning, etc". Of course you can read nearly every newspaper in the country during your coffee break.

Editor's Note: I'm only trying to keep up with Sarah Palin in the number of papers I read.

my subscription is going up $5 per month. seems like my cable bill goes up that much every year or so, and i haven't cancelled that yet. so, i will keep the paper. i'm one of those who enjoys leisurely reading the paper in the morning over my coffee. what else am i going to do in the morning -- talk to my wife??

Editor's Note: Good point. Actually I think it's the principle of the thing- if they said "you can get internet access for $5 more..." but give me the chance to not do so, then I'm fine (even though I'm losing something that I had before). But to raise my price and THEN try to tell me what a great thing it is....

thumbsup.gif I enjoyed your column.

The Democrat And Chronicle was always good for something even back in the eighties and nineties. I think they called it "fish-wrap" before, "shrink-wrap" became the key word.

Don't feel bad though. The Olean Times Herald is only 16 pages long and they hiked the price to .75 from .50 just a couple of years ago. Seventy five cents for a front page, local sports, and a few not so good comics. (It's the only paper around, with no real competition so they ARE making a good profit, even with fewer sales.)

The shrinking readership who pays more for less news... Sounds kind of Freudian to me.

Editor's Note: I would love to know how many subscribers they have lost due to the price hike.
