Minor correction, Neptune...

I think Cary Grant's real name was actually ARCHIE Leech, not Larry.

Editor's Note: That's correct. Thanks for the correction.

Kind of interesting that the prudish WOTL auto censor listed Hal Linden as Hal Lip!*&!@z. I thought we were all adults here?

Editor's Note: I did not see that. A man on LI went to court to get his name changed. It was Walter Schitt. ($chitt). The judge asked him what new name did he want. He said, "Harry."

So what!!! They are entertainers, what is your issue? Get over it!

Editor's Note: The word "issue" is so over-used it has become meaningless. If you mean "problem," say it !

Makes one wonder whether the conservative bias against the Hollywood Elite might have a sinister basis.

Editor's Note: An excellent observation.

Thanks for your comment.

Albert commented:

"Makes one wonder whether the conservative bias against the Hollywood Elite might have a sinister basis."

You made note this was an excellent observation.

With all due respect, I believe it's a flawed observation. First, it implies that the Hollywood elite ARE Jewish. Second, it implies Conservatives have a bias against the Hollywood elite BECAUSE they're Jewish.

I think jumping to the conclusion the Hollywood elite are all Jewish shows the bias of the one(s) making the assumption more than it does prove the bias of Conservatives. Further, assuming that Conservatives are biased against the Hollywood elite simply because they're Jews shows a lack of knowledge on the part of the one(s) drawing that conclusion.

Considering the fact so many on the Left equate Conservatives with the Christian Right and vice versa, drawing the conclusion Conservatives/Christians hold a bias against those of the Jewish faith is absurd. Christians, by and large, believe Jews are God's chosen people. I'm not really sure how that translates into a bias against them.

Conservatives have a bias against some of the Hollywood elite because they are Liberal. Race is a non-issue. This is simply another example of race being injected where it doesn't belong. That is, unless Liberals consider themselves a race, now.

Editor's Note: Thanks for your comment although I have trouble discerning what your problem is. You used the term "race" when referring to the column. Only the Nazi's described the Jews as a "race."

Allow me to clarify my position. The implication of what Albert wrote and you agreed with is that 1) the Hollywood elite are Jews and 2) Conservatives are biased against the Hollywood elite because they are Jews. I take issue with both assumptions.

I'd have a pretty difficult time believing you couldn't understand why someone (like me) might find those assumptions offensive.

Do you really believe the Hollywood elite are Jews and that Conservatives and/or the Christian Right are biased against them because they're Jews?

You took issue with my use of the word 'race'. I'll concede that was a poor choice of words. My point, however, is relatively the same. This is a case of BIGOTRY (not racism) being introduced where it doesn't belong.

I believe many changes were made because the new names are easier to write, remember, sexier sounding or more manly. Image is king in Hollywood.

OK, what is your problem? Are you a bigot or are you trying to make a point? Please clarify.

Editor's Note: I don't have a problem. I was brought up on LI, but was born in Brookly, where, at that time, there were more Jews in Brooklyn than in the "Holy Land." os Israel was then called. I thought most of the people were Jewish or of Italian descent.

"... in Brookly, where, at that time, there were more Jews in Brooklyn than in the "Holy Land." os Israel was then called."

Interesting fact you offered in an editor's note. Perhaps you could help me out, and point me to a site which could verify that for me. I can not find one. Thank you in advance for your help.

Editor's Note: Try "population of Jews in NYC, and population of Jews in Israel."

I had already done that, Sir, before making my comment. Your wrote that, at one time, there were more Jews living in Brooklyn than in Israel.

According to the 2010 census(you can check it out)the current population of Brooklyn is 2,504,700. According to this site(http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/Society_&_Culture/newpop.html) the population of Israel is 7,746,000 with Jews comprising 75.4% of the population for a total of 5,837,000.

Not that it makes a lot of difference to me...but sometimes I am fascinated with facts. The numbers soehow just don't seem to add up in this case.

Editor's Note: Some trivia: Many years ago I looked in the Brooklyn White pages and found over 100 pages, 4 columns each, with the last name of Cohen.

I believe the date was 1947 at the time of the Partition.

Thanks for your comment.

Yeah, I doubt anyone ever took Richard Benjamin for a gentile...

Editor's Note: When I saw the list, I was really amazed about how many of these performers were favorites of mine. I never thought about their ethnic backround.

Good comment.

They did it with Italians, too. Tony Bennett.

Editor's Note: I saw a list of Italian-Americans who had Anglized their names, but I have yet to find it again.

Good comment.
