I am hoping some of you may have noticed although perhaps that is my wishful thinking that I have not been around this week writing or commenting or anything. That is because I have been busy with my newest project - a kitchen remodel.
It is hard! For example do I buy granite, quartz, laminate or another one of the million products out there? I have a fake brick wall that I am going to paint... so color choices galore along with dozens of kinds of paint, some with primer, some not. Not to mention have you priced a gallon of paint lately?
Next it is the floor, oak, porcelain, ceramic, vinyl?? Brushed nickle or chrome or white or what? Oh and one cannot forget the knobs must match whatever you decide upon or certain HGTV will give you a thumbs down. A new sink - what gauge? Undermount or drop-in? Actually i wanted a porcelain sink again - but guess what??? They are harder to get and cost a fortune. The new thing is something that looks like marble. Oh and one company wanted to charge 415.00 for a new sink. I know I am old when that sounds rediculous to me...so I am going stainless.
I found out something we older homemakers would never know. Did you know that when you buy this new sink - the basket - thata saves your septic tank from everything - does not come with the sink?
Oh another thing the new appliances are only produced to last 10 or 12 years and you no longer can put the old item in the garage as a 'spare' because they are not made to take our cold weather. Hmm, I keep musing on the changing world - and it has!
Believe me folks there have been times this week when my backyard bird count or the enemy who have been absent due to our mild winter - sounded like more fun.
All kidding aside my new high definition laminate, beveled edge counter wil look lovely with the oak hardwood floor, black side by side, and brushed nickle faucet installed on the stainless sink. I also like my paint colors of popcorn and oat. The knobs may have to do. Even the new white ceiling fan will match. When I finish, if you notice 'This Old House' filming my 10 x 10 kitchen for their magazine I know none of you will be surprised, you can just say - 'I knew her when she thought she was a writer!'
The final touch, of course, are the accessories. New curtains, the bowl of fruit, shelves, whatever. That is what I will concentrate on this week, so get ready for next weeks column
You know you men do have it easier - all you have to do is the work.....lol!!!!
