wip-tbc----2. THE BEST DAY OF MY LIFE---great topic from amnesiac?

The best day of anyone's life, is the day they can remember with a smile. The more the merrier???

=====================

Yoda to me, fall of 1966;;;

'Athlete you are....'NOT'...'

I remember going out for the varsity basketball team, after the last football game of that season, kind of as a joke, since several football players were letter-men in basketball also...

They wanted to see how the coach, they admired, would handle cutting 'little john' the first practice...

So there I was in shorts and t-shirt, going through the layup drills where one side rebounds the ball and passes to the other line going in for layups...

I got so focused, on getting the rebound, I ran into the star point guard and put him into the wall...(there WERE mats hanging on the wall under and behind the baskets..)

With kind of a sheepish half grin the coach motioned me to the side and was going to 'let me go'...

(Not a big surprise, but it seemed the whole team wanted to hear what he would say, and how he would handle it.)

Coach: 'John, I really appreciate, your trying out for the team, but I can only have 12 players, and I have kind of got those twelve sorted out.'

'You have a lot of desire, and spirit, but we don't need an offensive tackle on the basketball court, nor on the bench.'

'I already have promised another fellow to be statistician, and we have two managers already, so if you want, you could be my 13th man who supports us in spirit from afar, and pray not for our success, but for our health, and for our players to be injury free.'

'You won't get a letter for basketball, but you will get one for football.'

'And you'll always get a smile from me, as a coach and a teacher, because I'll always know you are out there somewhere, pulling for the home team, and me, and the whole school, regardless of whether we win or lose, but reminding us to be a young human being of character, integrity, and desire, to improve, in what ever way, God chooses for you...'

p.s. or addendum...
I was used to being on high honor role, academically, and somehow, ended up on the National Honor Society, my junior year, despite being absent 33 days, and tardy 128 days or so, (Big Fat Farm Kid?),

and the only red mark or failing grade I ever got was in physical education, because,,,,I was a klutz, at times... I never told the USMC recruiter I was a physical failure, but they took me just the same in Oct of 1968, on a 90 day delay program, to give me one last Christmas at home, down on the farm, or up in the clouds so to speak...

I got a good start here 'A' , so I'll flesh out this essay later...

Thanx for trigger ring my thoughts...
