thumbsup.gif THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES--DID YOU EVER HAVE TO KNEEL ON PEBBLES IN FRONT OF THE CLASS ALTAR WHILE PRAYING NUMEROUS HAIL MARYS AND OUR FATHERS?

Editor's Note: Hi heather! So, a "good Catholic girl, huh? The worst we had to kneel on was hard tile or marble. Did they put the pebbles there just to make it painful or was it just outside or something? Tom

As you know, Tom, St. Augustine School closed in the mid 80's and was rented to the City of Rochester School District for many years - as was several other catholic schools.

When funding ran out for the city, they withdrew and the building was left an empty shell. Part of my job as the Business Manager was to show this (and other) buildings to prospective tenants, whether they be blossoming charter schools or investors who would turn them into apartments. None of that ever happened, of course, and when the Church of St. Augustine closed itself, was sold as a package to another religious order.

I write all this in response to the feelings you have brought to the forefront - when showing this "property" it never failed for me to imagine what it must have been like when it was a bustling and exciting place, full of kids and swirling black dresses of the nuns - how they must have sweltered in the heat with those habits- and how sad it was to see it now.

At least its being used again, but I think it is as a educational outlet for unwed mothers.

But you are right - they were never right about ANY of us :)

Editor's Note: Hi Eileen! Thanks for the update! I really liked that building...it had such a wonderfully austere atmosphere and the thousands and thousands of kids that passed through there! And that was just one neighborhood school of many many more in Rochester. That took a huge load off the public schools. The nuns' outfits that impressed me the most were those worn by the sisters who worked at St. Mary's hospital down the road. That head gear was IMMENSE! It would be like going around in a dog-cone all day. Tom

I don't understand about the white lips.

Editor's Note: Hi MCR. Let's interpret as chalk dust from getting hit in the face with an eraser?

ps. I don't think Jesus expected to end up on the cross.

Editor's Note: Quite seriously I have also wondered about that. I figure he He either expected to rise to power without that inconvenience or that his His Father would rescue him Him way before they started torturing him Him to death. I think he He surly would have (given the choice) picked water boarding. So even the Bible agrees with Dick Cheney.

Eileen brings up the topic of "unwed Mothers"

I once (long time ago) dated a girl who worked in the church rectory. This was in the 60s so several priests were in residence.

She used to tell people that she worked in a home for unwed fathers.

Editor's Note: Hah! That's a good one and of course has a clean interpretation.

thumbsup.gif This is funny, I'm going to have Bryan read it in a sec... Love you!

Editor's Note: Greetings Mrs. Sykes! Yeah, and that was really the way it was! Tommy
