I'm telling you, they made a horrible mistake!
So in the name of getting that bastard and getting him good to teach those fundies a lesson they'll never forget, they let this guy go free.
The jury reached the verdict against Scott Roeder after only 37 minutes of deliberation.
He never said he didn't do it, so this isn't the issue. The issue is how he was treated in court. Watch. Wait. See. He's going to get off because they violated his civil rights.
Scott Roeder is the man who walked into a church with a loaded gun, put it to the head of a late term abortionist who was serving as an usher for his church, and murdered him execution style.
It ain't like it's a mystery about who did the crime. He did it. He admits he did it. That's not the problem.
The problem is that Sedgwick County, Kan., District Judge Warren Wilbert did not allow the jury to consider convicting Roeder with the lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter, which is defined as "an unreasonable but honest belief that deadly force was justified" in Kansas.
Roeder's attorneys will appeal, and it is going to go all the way to the Supreme Court, I guarantee it! His attorneys right now are telling him to allow them to file the appeal, and then fire them. He'll get a new legal team, and it's going all the way. The reason is that the judge should have allowed the jury to consider the charge of manslaughter.
Personally, I think that the 1st degree murder charge is appropriate. He thought about it, planned it, and followed through with the plan. The problem is that this guy is going to get off because the judge should not have prohibited the jury from considering the manslaughter charge. He is certainly guilty of the charge of voluntary manslaughter, but to deny him a proper defense to protect abortion case law, was a clear violation of his Constitutional rights. We are guaranteed the right to a fair trial, and that man was denied his right to one because they let politics cloud their decisions. Bad idea. Bad ruling.
I must say that it really irks me that they did this as well. I don't want to see a murderer walk scot-free, but I'd rather see a guy get away with murder, than to watch our legal system get raped as it did. You can't decide to deprive a person of their right to a fair trial, just because it might encourage others to do the same thing. Perhaps the issue is the controversy, and instead of going out of their to not make the case about abortion, which it clearly is, they should address the facts. All of them, not just the ones that pro-abortion folks feel are convenient.
Truth of the matter is that Roeder shot the doctor out of a conviction that he would be preventing "more carnage on the unborn", and you know what? He actually accomplished his mission! They closed the abortion clinic, so it is end of story. He made himself a martyr, and late term abortions are still crimes against humanity that need to be discussed and deliberated. What pushed Roeder over the top was that the legal system would not stop this man. He was murdering children that could have certainly survived had they just allowed the head to exit the mother, instead of stopping and shoving a scalpel in the childs brain and killing it instead. There is no excuse for that. No more excuse for that than what Roeder did, and now we have allowed him to go free.
Neither of the people involved here are innocent. One is dead, and the other will be a free man and a hero in short order. Watch. Wait. See.
